Pingali Venkayya – Design of National Flag
Pingali Venkayya is credited with designing the current national flag of India, which was adopted on July 22, 1947, by the Constituent Assembly. The flag has three horizontal stripes of equal width – saffron at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. In the center of the white stripe is a navy blue wheel with 24 spokes, known as the Ashoka Chakra.
- The saffron color represents courage and sacrifice, the white color represents peace and truth, and the green color represents prosperity and faith. The Ashoka Chakra represents the cycle of life and death and is also a symbol of the dynamic movement of the universe. It is derived from the Lion Capital of Ashoka, which is a sculpture of four lions standing back to back, mounted on an abacus with a frieze carrying sculptures in high relief of an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull, and a lion separated by intervening wheels over a bell-shaped lotus.
- The design of the national flag went through several iterations before its final adoption. In 1921, Venkayya submitted a design that had two red and green bands with a white band in the middle, and a charkha (spinning wheel) in the center. Mahatma Gandhi suggested some changes to the design, including using the colors saffron, white, and green, and replacing the charkha with the Ashoka Chakra.
- The final design of the flag was adopted on July 22, 1947, and has remained the official national flag of India ever since. It is a symbol of the country’s independence, unity, and diversity.
